The “LOC 37” laboratory and office building is a groundbreaking new-build on the Roche premises in Penzberg, Upper Bavaria. It marks the first building on site where pharmaceuticals and diagnostics divisions work together under one roof.

The scope

The task was general technical planning for work phases 1-8. With a generous floor area of 37,900 m2, the new-build not only offers spaces for labs and offices, but also a training centre, bistro, medical services and a health centre. The building is arranged around a central atrium, linking the various storeys and divisions across visual axes and becoming the beating heart of the building.

The highlight

One particular highlight of the building is the kinetic pendulum in the atrium. This is a gilded ring with a screen that moves through the space, gradually building up the unseen picture The School of Athens.

The planners

Planning and conception for the project were taken on by the renowned architects Architekt Henn GmbH, while SÜSS Beratende Ingenieure GmbH & Co. KG took over technical implementation. This formidable building impressively combines innovation and functionality, symbolising how progressive Roche is as a company.
